It’s
Not All Lesbian Vampire Porn, Jackie.
Yeah, I write fanfic.
And it's not my dirty little secret. My friends know
about it. My family knows about it. Even some of my co-workers know
about it, It's just something that I do. I was writing fanfic before
I even knew what it was. Many a story I could tell you about making
up my own endings to episodes of "Who's the Boss?" back in
the day. Lord knows that it took the writers seven seasons for Tony
and Angela to get their act together. In my own head, they got it together
every week as the show ended. I just wasn't writing it down.
I got into fanfic in college because, let's face it,
it's an awesome time waster. Just Google "fanfic" and over
5 million hits come up. Is it any wonder I never made it to class? I
cut my teeth on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" fanfic, because
it was the first one I thought of. But I quickly learned that not a
lot of stories existed for my couple (Picard/Crusher, thankyouverymuch.)
so I moved onto "The X-Files." You could start reading The
Gossamer Project today and still be reading five years later.
So I read. For a long time.
I always wanted to try my hand at writing, but I suffer
from lack of confidence (Shocking, isn't it?) and I never really got
up enough nerve. Until I hit "The West Wing."** My love for
Aaron Sorkin knows no bounds. I devoured that show. And, again, there
was a shocking lack of fic for my favorite pairing (CJ/Josh), so I finally
decided to give it a whirl...with a partner.
The rest is kind of history. I moved from TWW into
"General Hospital" (Don't judge!) and from GH...I pretty much
went wherever the fandoms blew me. To date, I've logged stories in the
following fandoms: The X-Files, The West Wing, Gilmore Girls, The O.C.,
The Nanny, Battlestar Galactica, General Hospital, Law & Order:
SVU, House M.D. and most recently The Young and the Restless.
Why do I do it? The best answer I can come up with
is that I have something to say. Something beyond the fade to black
or Executive Producer's card. Sometimes it's straight up wishful thinking
or dreaming, but other times I base stories off what's happened in show
canon and take it further.
And contrary to “popular” belief, it’s
not all porn. (Or pr0n) Sure, I enjoy the occasional PWP (Plot? What
plot?), and the occasional slash paring, but the fanfic writers I enjoy
the most are the ones who stay true to the characters and have a firm
grasp on spelling, grammar and punctuation. (And if they don't, they
have a beta reader who does.)
I’d love to write more about this, but I’m
expecting my Bubbleficathon
assignment any moment, and I need to hit the tub to brainstorm.
**This is a blatant lie. The very first fanfic I wrote
was for "Caroline in the City." It no longer exists on the
internets. Therefore, it doesn't count. Because I said so.

P.S. And one more thing - I forgot to put Alias on
my list of fandoms I've written for. ;)
