It has been pointed out to me that I need to move
to a new part of the world called the dork forest. Kind friends
have hinted, made suggestions and heck, one even printed out directions.
So I sharpened my ax and headed out. I’m going to need to
chop down a few trees. I need the wood. Furniture must be created.
I need to build cabinets, shelves, drawers, etc. My zone of the
dork forest needs space to hold a vast collection of Cast recordings.
OK, definition: Cast recording is a recording of
a stage musical (or film) made by a group of people (the cast) that
performed it in another media (i.e. on stage or on film).
My stuff is more than just Broadway, since that
is specifically a small subset of theatre located in Manhattan.
(boy I am a dork) My collection has recordings from Japan, Sweden,
Germany, Korea and the U.K. Oh, and there is one from Poland I really
really want. I have recordings on CD (naturally), plus cassette,
and LP, and even on reel-to-reel. And no I won’t define any
of those media for anyone. (ED. I'm with you, Chris: we're online
- Google it!)
Not only do I have all this stuff, I actually listen
to it. I also organize it obsessively. Every album is in strict
alphabetical order. Each CD is placed in its case so that it is
facing the right way. I’m not sure how a minor hobby turned
into a huge obsession. I bought a few albums of shows I had seen.
And then I got interested and bought a few more. A few months ago
when I reached 1000 albums I was in shock. And yet, it grows. It
continues to grow. More cast albums, more storage bins, and more
music. Often can tell my mood by what I choose to listen too. Welcome
to my own special corner of the dork forest, sit down, put your
feet up and have a listen. (ED. I want to know what your favorites
are... what should people buy?? - e
me!)
